Well, I asked for it and I finally got it. Some good points. Some I don't agree with, but hey. That's the nature of asking for it ;)

1) A glaring hot spot on the top of her head, drawing attention there, but in a negative way. This may work in your favor, as it makes the oddness of the models right leg a bit less apparent. Why didn't you just have her tuck it under, so that she was curled in more on herself. You also could've played more with the "Perishable" written on the side of the garbage underneath her. Just the words fit so well, a missed opportunity.

2) What reason do you have to present this shot horizontally? If you have one, great. If you did it just because, then turn it vertical and see if it gets a better response. Breaking it down into blocks of color, I like what you tried, but I think you hit just entirely too much gray, or not enough white, to get the effect you were going for. What you have succeeded in doing is losing detail where just a bit would have made the shot much more appealing.

3) Once more, that high hot spot on the hair, pulling attention the wrong way. This one is easily fixed, as from the models forehead to the top of the frame can just be cropped out. Try it, you may like how it looks much better! Sadly, a lack of direction on your part has the pose and expression bland, so while the styling and set is interesting, it may not worth be salvaging this shot. Call it a learning experience, do it again, and do it better.

4) Ya know, I actually like this one. Good tonality, good framing when considering the composition and angle, and a Good presentation border to keep the horizontal from leading the eye to the next image. Not such a fan of the window in the upper right, but it's forgivable.

5) You can crop out almost everything in this shot, and make it much better. All of that white sky has no reason, no elemental purpose in the picture. Try cropping it so it's just the first two windows and the building, no sky showing. You'll still get the play of perspective lines, and it may make the shot much more interesting. Right now, there is just too much space used superfluously.

6) I'll leave this one alone, wish there was some detail in the windows, but it is well executed enough that it doesn't need it really either.

7) Way too much space on the top of the frame. Could've been an interesting pin-up if the face was included. And if you are going to match the shoes to the set, match the dress to. As it stands, that is an ugly and sickly tone in the wardrobe for the rest of the shot.

8) Just the opposite, I would've liked this more in a horizontal format than a vertical, the scene is just as interesting as the model, and it would've been nice to know more about it.

9) I actually like the blown highlights here. Maybe mess with the curves a bit, try to get a little deeper on the blacks, as you don't really seem to have many.

10) From about the middle up is not needed for this shot. The window is not needed at all. Also, considering filtering over this, maybe give it a blue tint to the highlights, it could look like a very interesting moonlit shot.

11) Bad crop for this shot, and just misses on the pose. If you are going to compare geometric to fluid forms, make sure to avoid geometric lines in your curves. Scrap this, do it again. You were so close, there's no reason not to.

This one was based on a copy of "Linear Curva" but with a slightly different body positioning

12) That horribly blown highlight on the bottom right is the key element of interest. Even without it, the rest of the tones are flat and bland, and the model just looks drunk, not numb. Try this, and for inspiration, play Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" over and over again in the background. See if you don't like what you get better.

13) Good color, good pose, good crop and frame. Good work. Careful of that extraneous white element towards the bottom left.

14) The models pose and expression are not at all engaging. She looks bored as hell with what you are attempting. She also looks badly blurred, or perhaps just badly processed in post. Lose this, please. Even your other failed attempts are a far cry above.

It was "Stormy Weather" that I had appearing in my gallery here. Part of the "Lady in Red" series. In fact I did receive feedback that the colouring was nice, and was happy myself with positionings as such but as pointed out to me the expression wasn't that engaging and I looked as if I was going to fall over. I killed it in dA but still have it up in MM. Will be re-doing this concept again soon because I think that it is too good an idea not to attempt it again.

I also know that people like the "lady in red" and the "hollywood glamour" series but I am not happy with it. The ideas are fantastic, but as I rushed it so much (the place I was shooting in was scary as hell) I didn't get it "quite right". Will attempt to see what comes about when I go back to that location. With a bodyguard. And a bat.

I have received feedback on "The Old World" stating that it is lovely concept but the colours appear off. It may be my screen callibration to be honest. I have an LCD screen that needs regular callibration. However I have printed this up to 8"x12" with the same colour matching as I put in my deviation and the colours looks absolutely fantastic. Who knows really. The print looks great so that's all I am worried about as I have ten orders so far for that one.

So overall, the criticism wasn't that painful.

BTW: Had tests today. Will know results on Wednesday. Don't ask before then because I am already stressing the crap out.

Who did those critiques ?
~jonnymorris:iconjonnymorris: May 12, 2008, 2:37:14 AM
Yes, I would agree with most, if not all of those. I've been lapse in my critiquing in recent times, perhaps a lack of focus or integrity on my part.

It occurs to me that great pictures are the result of trial and error, just like painting is, and it may take several attempts to get the shot just right; so please do go back to your old pictures that you weren't quite happy with, think about how they could be improved, and do it! Repeat as necessary ;)

Thank you for sharing those critiques with us, it certainly gives me things to consider that I would not have necessarily noticed before in your photos. Hopefully I can apply these considerations to my own shots in future! :)

just remember in all photography, if you can master the shadows you will succeed ... its the negative space that counts as much if not more so than the subject itself :)

The process of thinking about the work from other perspectives is the valuable tool here.
You can never take the same photo again - just practice thinking through the lens.
You are already superb at it.

Precisely, which is why I don't mind the criticism even if some of them I just blatantly do not agree with.

I've had a number of people going "Oh, that would have hurt and made you feel bad. You poor thing." Just the opposite to be honest. Yes, there are things that I just outright do not agree with but there is no point arguing on the point of view of why I did what I did with a person if they did not get it already.

With anything there is a fine balance of using technical knowledge in what you see, balancing rulings, and blatantly going against everything and breaking every rule to get the feel in the photo that you wanted.

There are most definately things here that I will consider and look at as I did not know or notice myself, but there are others that I go "Sorry guys, but you have to remember that I am an artist as well as a photographer. Look at what I have done in that light too."

You'd agree with most if not all of these? That's pretty harsh.

No photo of mine can be repeated due to the concept that goes behind the picture. There are ideas and themes that can be attempted again but no photo can be repeated. I am not a commercial photographer that sits there making pretty little photos to put into magazines. I make art. I just use a camera instead of a paintbrush.

So yes, I agree with a lot of things here on how I can improve photos and techniques, but I think a lot of these critiques completely and utterly miss the point of viewing this in an Artistic critique not a Photographic one. None of these photos are going to be touched because I like them and am proud of them. If other people don't like them then stuff it. But to me, they are perfect for the time of creation and the knowledge that I had at the time that is why they are up here.
